The whales visit Puerto Vallarta every year and have become one of the most popular natural attractions among touristsand locals; so popular that from January 8th-11th the first ever Ballenarte Festival will be held to promote the conservation of this species in Banderas Bay and Vallarta-Nayarit.

 

The ECOBAC (Ecology and Conservation of Whales) organization is the creator of this first festival. According to their website, their objectives include making Banderas Bay the nation’s premier destination for observing the species, in addition to raising funds and encouraging whale protection.

 

The opening will be on Wednesday, January 8th, 2014 on the Los Muertos pier. Among the scheduled activities for the event are documentaries, lectures, a treasure hunt and dinners to benefit the organization. The closure will be on Saturday the 11th and will include participation by whale conservationists; this is a public event that anyone can attend.

From December to March, humpback whales come to Vallarta to escape the cold weather and to give birth to their young. Those who would like to admire this impressive species breaching and swimming off the coast of Banderas Bay can find a number of services offered in the area. There are tour agencies dedicated specifically to ecologically-responsible whale watching, with costs ranging from 500 to 1000 pesos; each journey lasts about four hours.

Recommendations include: wearing comfortable clothes, a swimsuit, sandals, hat and sunscreen. Children should be over the age of three.
